It's still the same diaper parents have trusted for years, made with the same materials and high standards. EWG Verification simply provides independent confirmation that those standards meet some of the strictest criteria in the industry.

Let’s start with the basics: what is the EWG?

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a nonprofit organization that evaluates products based on ingredient safety, transparency, and manufacturing practices.

Its EWG Verified® program recognizes products that meet rigorous standards designed to help consumers make more informed choices. Rather than relying solely on a company's own claims, products undergo an extensive review to verify they meet EWG's requirements.

For diapers, those requirements are especially comprehensive.

What does a diaper have to do to become EWG Verified®?

A diaper can’t earn EWG Verification by checking a single box. It's about meeting a long list of standards across materials, ingredients, testing, and manufacturing.

To be EWG Verified®, a diaper must be:

☐ Total Chlorine Free (TCF)

Made without Chlorine or Chlorine Dioxide bleaching agents, often used in Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) diapers

☐ Limited in its use of colorants (dyes, pigments, inks)

Colorants must be ≤8% of the diaper’s outer layer, not in contact with skin + pass toxicological review

☐ Made without fragrance or lotions

Ingredients intended to smell ‘good’ or ‘condition’ skin can’t be added

☐ Made with pulp from sustainably managed forests

>90% of pulp material by weight, as certified by an independent third party

Just as importantly, to be EWG Verified®, there are strict limits on what can't be present:

☐ Wetness indicator with ingredients linked to harm

No Quaternary Ammonium Compounds + must phase out halogenated organic compounds, like Bromocresol Green

☐ Total VOC emissions > 60 ppb

And there can be no detectable concentration of Formaldehyde or Methylene Chloride

☐ Phthalates > 50 ppm or PAHs > 0.2 ppm

Hazardous compounds that may contaminate diapers can’t exceed EWG’s parts per million limits

☐ Plant-derived fibers contaminated with pesticides

No detectable concentrations of glyphosate; natural fibers can’t be treated with pesticides linked to endocrine disruption

☐ Any of the following compounds linked to health harm*

Parabens, phthalates, flame-retardant chemicals, organotin compounds, Triclosan or Triclocarbon, Bisphenols, Optical brighteners for whitening purposes, superabsorbent polymers contaminated w/ acrylamide

*Carcinogenicity, reproductive/developmental toxicity, respiratory or skin sensitization, or aquatic toxicity

It’s not just about the diaper itself. The company’s practices matter too.

One thing we appreciate about the EWG Verified® program is that it looks beyond the product. In addition to the strict standards the diaper must meet, the company that makes the diaper must also:

☐ Develop, follow + document a quality control system

Including procedures for quality analysis, maintenance of adequate cleanliness + raw material safety assessment

☐ Disclose all intentionally added ingredients

Clearly on packaging + website; Including dyes, fibers, elastics + chemical

components of wetness indicators

☐ Partake in plastic + waste reduction initiatives

And invest in 2 new initiatives in the next 2 years—e.g. recycling programs, plastic alternative research, carbon offsetting, or renewable energy

As parents, we know it's easy to go down the rabbit hole researching every product your baby uses. That's why independent verification can be so valuable. It gives you one more trusted source confirming that a product meets rigorous standards for ingredient safety and transparency.

For us, becoming EWG Verified® isn't about introducing a new diaper. It's about validating the one we've been making since we started.

The review process took approximately four months and included 18 lab reports, extensive documentation of our materials and manufacturing processes, and testing for everything from formaldehyde emissions and VOC compliance to our wetness indicator chemistry and quality control systems.

We're proud to be one of the few diaper brands to earn EWG Verification today, and even more proud that nothing about the diaper itself had to change.
